14 Jul Scottish keeps dancing
Woodpark Stud breeze-up sale graduates were to the fore at Caulfield at the weekend, with two horses almost completing a race-to-race double. Scottish Dancer won his third race on the trot for trainer Andrew Bobbin and Roll The Dice Racing, and Malkovich was a close second in the Listed Sir John Monash Stakes (1200m).
Scottish Dancer has been a terrific horse for his connections, winning six races of his 13 starts, as well as a third placing. He has split his wins evenly with original trainer’s Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr and also his new home with Andrew Bobbin after a tree change to the country.
Bobbin has only taken him to the races four times and it seems he has found the key to this horse.
“He can be a bit of a quirky horse so I think that the country environment has suited him well,” Roll The Dice’s Racing Manager Steve Travaglia said.
“In fairness to Mick Price, he half suggested that a change of scenery may be better for him and after his last prep at Caulfield, he needed a break and a little ‘clean-up,’ so we had him in pre-training with Andrew and really liked the way he went about it.”
Scottish Dancer was purchased for $75,000 at the Magic Millions 2YOS In Training Sale by Roll The Dice Racing, previously selling for $60,000 as a yearling. His total prize money is now just shy of $190,000.
Woodpark Stud purchased the son of Dream Ahead at the 2018 Magic Millions Adelaide Sale and then offered him at the breeze-up sale later that same year.
Malkovich was returning to Caulfield after his win south of the border two weeks prior and again ran a gallant race.
Trainer Bjorn Baker was keen to test Malkovich at Listed level at Caulfield with races such as the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) in the back of his mind for early next year.
Malkovich has now headed to the spelling paddock after another fruitful preparation. He has had four runs this time in for two wins and two seconds.
He has also been an outstanding horse for connections and as is the case with Scottish Dancer, is owned and managed by a leading syndicator.
“It is always pleasing to see horses you sell end up with these types of organisations because they give the horse every possible chance to succeed and both of these groups have done a terrific job in their own right with these horses,” Woodpark’s Jean Dubois said.
Malkovich was purchased as a yearling by Woodpark for $85,000 at the 2019 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. He was then offered later that year at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale and bought by Darby Bloodstock for $240,000.
His total prize money is greater than $400,000 in what has been an excellent result for all involved. Woodpark stayed in the ownership of Malkovich in a small way and recently purchased his half-sister Seewhatshebrings in foal to Pierata.
The concept of buying yearlings to sell at breeze-up sales, or even selling horses they have bred, has proven to be a successful one with Listed-winning filly See You In Spring coming off their farm and being sold by Highlands Racing and Bloodstock on Woodpark’s behalf at last years Inglis Ready2Race Sale.
