Largo Winch broke his maiden in stressful fashion for the Woodpark Stud team, winning the Sky Racing Maiden over a mile in a photo finish with James Innes Junior driving him home.
Largo Winch was fast away and Innes was able to settle him in the lead without too much fuss. He was left alone until the 600m when the horses behind started to make their runs.
Ting Tong with Hugh Bowman on board tried to reel the leader in, but Largo Winch was able to hold on in a gutsy win.
“He has been ticking along nicely this preparation,” trainer Jean Dubois said.
“We started him off over 1000m, but we knew we had to build his fitness. He has shown that he has a liking for 1600m.
“He ran third last start at Nowra over the mile, stepping up from 1300m the start previous, and he was a bit more forward than we thought he was with that run which was pleasing.
“We spaced his runs a little and thought that a track with a long straight like Hawkesbury would really suit him, although the straight was nearly too long today.”
Largo Winch broke his maiden at just his seventh start with two previous placings.
The gelded son of Mikki Isle (JPN) was purchased by Arthur Hoyeau on behalf of Woodpark Stud for $65,000 at the 2020 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale.
