25 Mar Sweet Win For Woodpark Stud
Green Sweet gave Woodpark Stud and trainer, Jean Dubios, their biggest thrill in Australian racing so far with victory in the Listed Commercial Country Club Albury Gold Cup over 2000m on Friday.
The former French galloper was second-up going into the feature race after a very pleasing second at his first Australian start at Rosehill earlier this month. The USA bred gelding is by Smart Strike and the Albury Gold Cup was his second Listed race win after being successful at that level in France over 1600m in 2015.
The race favourite, Cool Chap, looked like he had the race secured but Green Sweet was able to show his class and surge through and win by less than half a length.
“It’s a huge thrill, massive!” Dubois said
“He was out a bit too early, I asked Johan to try and save ground and be covered as long as possible.
“I thought he was very brave – he was out a bit too early but he was brave.”
Johan Victoire was on board and was also more than delighted with the win.
“Today I rode him with confidence as Jean had done a really good job to have him ready,” Victoire said.
“I followed the favourite and waited as long as I could as we knew he was the best horse in the race.
“The other horse put up a fight but my horse was brave and got there in the end.”
Green Sweet now has an overall record of three wins from 12 starts and a further four placings with a win and a second from his only two Australian starts so far. The five-year-old now has earnings of over $235,000.
Dubois will now see how the horse pulls up before a decision is made on where to go next but Scone has been touted as a possible option.
