Magic on the Gold Coast for Woodpark

13 Jan Magic on the Gold Coast for Woodpark

The 2021 Magic Millions Yearling Sale wasn’t long under way before the auction ring fireworks started to go off. The seventh lot through the ring was the Woodpark Stud-bred I Am Invincible colt out of Zighy Bay (USA), selling for $800,000.

Lot 7 – I Am Invincible x Zighy Bay (USA) sold for $800,000

The colt was purchased by Chris Waller Racing and Mulcaster Bloodstock.

Woodpark also offered two other horses on the second day of selling, with Lot 323, a Pariah filly out of Fly Me, selling to McEvoy Mitchell Racing and Belmont Bloodstock for $90,000. As well as a Caravaggio (USA) x Girluphigh (IRE) colt selling to Ciaron Maher Bloodstock for $170,000.

“It’s always pleasing to head to the sales and to see them sell well as there is a lot of hard work that gets them to this point,” Woodpark’s Jean Dubois said.

“The other encouraging thing is to see them head to some of the country’s best stables and each of these horses will have every chance of going on with the jobs at their respective homes.

“It will make the drive home a little more enjoyable I think.”

Dubois and wife Karine drove to the Gold Coast to see the horses go through the ring with all the uncertainty around flights out of Sydney.

The I Am Invincible x Zigby Bay (USA) colt was the headline act and lived up to his billing.

He was presented by Brian Nutt’s Attunga Stud, who said before the sale that “he was a lovely horse and did not put a foot wrong during the prep.”

Zighy Bay is also the dam of Group 1 South Australian Derby-winning filly Qafila which gave this colt a real ‘future stallion’s’ page.

“He’s going to go to our colts syndicate and be trained by Chris Waller,” said Guy Mulcaster after the purchase.

“We saw him on the farm about a month ago and he really attracted our eye then and we targeted him as one of a few horses that we’re going to have a go at today.

“He ticked all the boxes, as they say – you hear it every time there’s an interview done – but he was a lovely nice moving horse and I Am Invincible is such a great sire. I didn’t think he was going to take too long and the mare’s done a good job.

“Qafila, the other one out a mare, was winning from 1000 to 2500 (metres), so she was very versatile and this colt will just tell us in time where he ends up.”

Attunga also prepared the Pariah x Fly Me filly (Lot 323) purchased by leading South Australian trainer, Tony McEvoy.

When asked about the filly before the sale, Nutt added: “she’s a particularly good walker, she’s got a great attitude, and we think she’ll sell particularly well.”

The final yearling for Woodpark to go through the ring was the Caravaggio (USA) x Girluphigh (IRE) colt (Lot 342), presented by Sledmere Stud.

Caravaggio is a son of the champion US sire Scat Daddy, and although he only stood one season in Australia, he served quite a large book and has left an impression on the market.

Lot 342 is Girluphigh’s second foal with the first being Girl Mania, by Capitalist, and she has trialled impressively for Jean Dubois.

Woodpark Stud’s sales attention now shifts to the Inglis Classic Yearling sale where they will sell four lots. They can be viewed on our Sales Page.
