22 Jun Malkovich, the gift that keeps on giving
Malkovich was at his speedy best 12 June at Royal Randwick in the City Tattersalls Club Handicap over 1000m for Jason Collett, winning without a horse going past him throughout running.
It was the second run of the preparation for Malkovich after finishing second at his first outing off the back of two impressive trial wins. He ran second at the same track a fortnight earlier to Lillemor, who subsequently won the Listed Gai Waterhouse last weekend.
Malkovich has now had 11 career starts for five wins and three minor placings. His total prize money has now gone past $230,000.
It seems as though Malkovich is the gift that keeps giving for Woodpark Stud who purchased him for $85,000 as a yearling in 2019 to on-sell him at the Inglis Ready2Race Sale later that same year.
Darby Racing purchased Malkovich at that two-year-old sale for $240,000 which is testament to the eye of Jean Dubois of Woodpark Stud.
Woodpark kept a small share in the Choisir colt and he has not let the team down, providing plenty of thrills in his short career so far.
The connection with Woodpark doesn’t stop there. At this year’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, a half-sister to Malkovich named Seewhatshebrings was catalogued as Lot 1020. She was a three-time winning mare on the track, also placing at Group 3 level. She is by Sebring and out of the Anabaa mare Mabkhara and is in foal to young Aquis stallion Pierata.
She caught the attention of Dubois, who was at the sale largely to see the result of Qafila who was being sold as part of the Shadwell Stud dispersal. Qafila, a Group 1-winning filly, was bred by Woodpark.
“We saw she was in the sale and thought that we would go and have a look at her and we liked what we saw,” said Jean Dubois.
“We have the connection to the family, being the half to Malkovich and also the well-performed mare Wandabaa.
“She was a black-type mare and has a covering by a young stallion in Pierata, who looks very promising, and she has an excellent pedigree page that really opens up a lot of opportunities when looking for a stallion this season.”
Woodpark went to $450,000 to secure the filly in what was a very competitive market.
Malkovich has gone on to provide some timely pedigree updates for Seewhatshebrings and Wandabaa has also been racing consistently with a second placing at Randwick on the same day as Malkovich’s victory.
Qafila, in foal to Dundeel, went on to sell for $2 million to the bid of Dean Hawthorne Bloodstock.
